“All Better” Bandaid Campaign
Programs Used | Procreate, Adobe Photoshop
The “All Better” Bandaid Campaign focused on creating an illustration for the repackaging of the iconic American bandage product, Bandaid, as a relatable product for its users. The idea was to pull from past experiences of “needing a bandaid” that consumers can relate to.
The inspiration behind the concept derives from the well-known stereotypical school child, full of life and energy.
The nostalgia of coming home from school after a long day with a dirty uniform and probably a few bumps and bruises, especially from ill-fitting shoes. Sometimes met with a pet that is too cute not to pick up and love - even if that love is a little one sided.
But none of this means anything to a young child. They play, they fall, they get scrapped up and get right back to it without another thought.
A scrape is nothing when the world is so big and unexplored - especially after a bandaid.
Process
It started as two ideas.
There were originally two separate ideas for this concept. One relates to the tough love all cat lovers experience. The other is a more niche experience of the blisters that people experience while breaking into new saddle shoes. It then turned into mixing the two projects and creating a bigger experience.
The research portion of this piece mostly derived from personal experiences and my experiences with younger children. Every decision of the final image was made based on these experiences.
Art style
Rough inked outlines and shadows, bright colors, and the style the child is drawn in all follow art styles you’d find in children’s books. I wanted it to keep to the immersive experience of this time in life - in the eyes of a child.
Age of Subject
Depicting a young child was key to the nostalgia I wanted to immerse the viewer in. This nostalgic feeling of coming home from a long day of school full of amps and bruises from roughhousing to your favorite pet - is one people often pull from this stage in life. When life is still in its purest form, and the world feels the most fascinating.
Animal Choice
Children are for the most part very trusting, especially when it comes to cute animals. This mixed with the inability of a child to comprehend consequences due to underdevelopment of the brain - when they see a cute animal they want to hug, they will hug it. A cat was perfect for this. Cats are known for needing their personal space or they lash out - and children absolutely ignore that because of a cat’s cute fluffy complexion. Because of this lack of consequence understanding - even after being scratched and bit a child usually always comes right back or more. Nothing is more humorous than watching a cat give up and accept its fate that they cannot escape a small human and they just sit grumpily.
Uniform/ Saddle Shoes
Saddle shoes were a part of my original idea so making sure they stayed incorporated was ideal. In Catholic schools, uniforms are a requirement and those uniforms consist of saddle shoes. Anyone who has ever worn those shoes also knows the pain that comes with breaking them in. For most this experience is most prominent with the first time wearing saddle shoes, which for most is in childhood, so saddle shoes on a child fit harmoniously.
Background
The background to this piece was a lot of experimentation. At first, the idea was to create a very bright background that appeals to the eye of a child. However while the pink captured the cyanotic nature of the scene, this did not fully capture the correct feeling. While a child’s day-to-day is pretty chaotic to an adult it is normal to a child - so a calmer yet bright color green.
Meet Kiwi
Kiwi was the inspiration for this brand’s ferocious feline. She loves to cuddle - but only when she says so.
